In my estimation, this picture says it all. If you need to deliver today’s profit goals as well as plan for the profits of tomorrow, you need to have resources on both lanes of the road. You would never expect the same driver to be in both cars. So don’t expect to succeed if you have people responsible for today’s near-term profits trying to drive future transformative change. It takes two drivers, two pit crews and two cars to make this work.
And if you are not willing to make the resource investment in the left lane, don’t worry:
your competitors will and you’ll never even see them in your rearview mirror.
